Drama by Marc Forster A man named Otto – starring Tom Hanks – is doing solid business on the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday box office in a much-needed win for lopsided adult film movies.
The Sony release, which runs in 2,802 theaters, is expected to open over the long weekend for $15 million, enough to beat the new wide offering Flatan action shot starring Gerard Butler. Otto is expanding nationwide after launching in select theaters at the year-end box office. It earned an A Cinemascore on top of strong reviews.
Flat, from Lionsgate, is expected to gross $11.6 million for its four days from 3,023 movie theaters. The film, which earns a B+ CinemaScore from moviegoers, exceeds expectations.
Both films draw most of their power from consumers over the age of 45.
The two movies look at fourth and fifth. Holding onto No. 1 is James Cameron’s powerhouse Avatar: the way of the water, which aims for a four-day vacation of more than $38.5 million in 4,045 movie theaters. The Disney and 20th Century tentpole ends Monday with a domestic total of $570 million.
until Sunday, The way of the water will have grossed an estimated $1.89 billion worldwide, including an overseas draw of $1.33 billion. Sometime on Monday, the global total is expected to reach $1.9 billion, one of the all-time best showings.
Horror offer M3GAN doing well in its second weekend with earnings of $21.2 million for the four days from 3,605 locations. That would bring the film’s domestic total through Monday to $58.7 million against a modest budget of $12 million. M3GAN is from Universal, Blumhouse and Atomic Monster.
Universal will also claim the third spot on the family movie chart Puss in Boots: The Last Wishwhich is expected to earn $17.3 million for the four days from 3,687 movie theaters, cross the $100 million mark domestically and finish Monday with a North American total of $110.3 million.
Among other new nationwide offerings, House party — which was originally set up to debut on HBO Max — is looking to place sixth with a $4.5 million four-day opening from 1,300 theaters. The photo was produced by LeBron James, who also has a cameo in the comedy redux.
The devil’s plot falls flat in its debut with an expected four-day opening of $670,000.
