New record set for world’s largest pizza

(CNN) — And you think you helped finish a really big pizza recently? This is of no use to you.

When Pizza Hut decided to bring back its “big New Yorker” pizza — a cheese and pepperoni pie with foldable slices designed to be eaten on the go in true Manhattan style — the company wanted to find a way to celebrate the news .

So they headed to the Los Angeles Convention Center, the space of which would be big enough for a 13,990-square-foot pizza, aiming to break the Guinness World Record for the world’s largest pizza.

On Wednesday they got to work with the gigantic pizza. And on Friday, Pizza Hut sent out the official word: A Guinness representative on site said it was indeed the largest pizza in the world.

Guinness confirmed the record-breaking title with CNN Travel in an email late Friday afternoon.

How the pizza came about

To accomplish the huge task, the workers first laid down layers of dough, painted tomato sauce on them and then added toppings. After everything was set, it was baked into pieces, according to the Pizza Hut press release.

A total of 13,653 pounds (6,193 kilograms) of dough, 4,948 pounds of pizza sauce, more than 8,800 pounds of cheese and approximately 630,496 pieces of pepperoni went into making the record-breaking pie.

Pizza Hut CEO David Graves told Reuters the pizza would not go to waste.

The previous Guinness record for the world’s largest pizza was set in 2012 by a group of Italian chefs. Their pizza was 1,261.65 square feet, gluten-free, and named Ottavia.
